Rope Coaster Workshop

Discover the joy of creating beautiful rope coasters in our Rope Coaster Workshop at Riverside Beads & Crafts in Market Deeping, near Peterborough. This fun and hands-on session is perfect for those new to rope sewing or anyone looking for a creative refresher.

Guided by our friendly tutor, you’ll learn how to use your sewing machine and clothesline rope to make stylish coasters with professional finishes. The class begins by creating the starting coil and flat base — the key steps to making coasters and forming the foundation for future rope bowl projects. Once you’ve built your base, you’ll explore various finishing methods to secure your rope neatly.

After mastering the basics, you’ll move on to decorating your coasters. Experiment with different techniques such as using decorative stitches on your sewing machine, coloured or variegated threads, embroidery threads, ribbons, beads, and fabric wraps. Once you’ve learned the essentials, the design and finish are completely up to you — giving you creative freedom to make each coaster unique.

This workshop is ideal for beginners or anyone who enjoys sewing and wants to try a new craft. You’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to continue making rope coasters and bowls at home.

What to Bring:

You’ll need to bring:

• A sewing machine (older models work well!) with a zigzag stitch and adjustable stitch length
• A 90 or 100 Jeans needle
• Thread to tone or contrast (e.g. Moon natural or cream thread)
• Optional: coloured or variegated thread for decorative stitching
• Fabric to cover the base or wrap
• A basic sewing kit – scissors, pins, binding clips, and a Pritt Stick
• An extension table for sewing machine or books up to the height of the machine bed
• These are all available in store if you need to purchase on the day

All clothesline rope and base materials are provided.
