Jewellery Trends 2020

Hello Beautiful Beaders,

Happy new year my lovelies and welcome to 2020! Now that the festive season is finally over we can start looking forward to twelve more shiny months of beading. This year already looks exciting with a gazillion new jewellery trends hot off the catwalks.

Here’s my annual run down of the top picks to follow, replicate and create:-
A Natural Life
Apparently gold and diamonds are not all that glitters. Certainly not on the catwalks for 2020 where all things natural take centre stage. For instance Prada paraded shell necklaces and earrings while their diffusion line Miu Miu showed wooden brooches a-go-go. Other eco friendly fancies were raffia necklaces and recycled metals. Shame the price tags weren’t re-duced as well!

It an easy trend to emulate at home. Here at Riverside we sell lots of wooden findings, raffia and twine, fabulous for weaving into interesting and versatile pieces. I’m going to have a go at using some of my Kumihimo techniques with thin twines and raffia. Can’t wait to see what kind of designs I can create. Exciting!
Hoopla

Chunky hoop earrings

Hoop earrings made the rounds in all shapes and sizes this season. One of the big trends is to wear just a single large hoop but have it customised for uniqueness. You can emulate the paint-dipped hoops shown at Marni in a few simple steps:-
Marni
Marni Hoops
You will need:-
A large earring hoop, preferably a slightly wider style.
A small bowl (approx. 5cm diameter).
Enamel paint in the colour of your choice.
An old cup.
A pencil or skewer.
Sticky tape.
Optional paint brush.
Start by taping the pencil/skewer to the open rim of your old cup. The pencil/skewer wants to straddle the cup across the open top.
Next pour the enamel paint into the bowl. Dip the hoop earring into the paint so that half of it is coated.
Hook the earring on to the pencil/skewer and allow to dry. (This is why you need an old cup, in case the paint drips!)
Repeat the process until you have a thick covering of paint on your earring.
For an extra pop art look try using a paint brush to splatter a contrasting colour of paint onto your earrings. A la Jackson Pollock!
Only Choking
Chain chokers
Chain Chokers
Chokers remain high on must-have fashion lists. This year bigger is better in terms of links, with chunky styled chokers having flooded the catwalks. In all honestly there are a lot of chains about, as a whole. Many designers are layering these chain designs with chokers on top of long chains on top of midi chains. So get working on the chain gang!
We’ve got a great selection of findings and wires at Riverside Beads so be sure to check them out.
Lariats of Fire
Lariat
Lariat love
Like a lariat? The runways presented lots of options, from sexy at Versace to bougie à la Celine. A lariat is a long, noosed rope used to catch horses, cattle or other livestock. Otherwise known as a lasso, its now been replicated by the fashion pack as a longer line necklace made from gold and silver chains.
Happy Feet
Shoe jewels
Shoe brooches
There’s nothing cheesy about these jewellery trends….except that joke. Lol. Whether it’s brooches on your socks or jewels on your shoes. This one brings new meaning to the words twinkle toes!
Anklet
Anklet bling
Anklets are having a big comeback this year, from beaded beauties to delicately charmed chains. So get those Riverside Beads pliers at the ready because it’s so easy to make an anklet. If you’ve never made this kind of jewellery before why not book yourself onto one of our beginners workshops? After just one class you could be making necklaces, earrings, anklets and beyond! Click here to find out more.
Other things to look out for are a resurgence in Pearl jewellery trends plus a lean more towards silver, than gold this year.
Well I hope that’s whet your appetite for the new year. I feel it’s going to be a bumper creative one for us all. We’ve already got some amazing new workshops lined up at the Riverside Makery. There’s Eve Marshall’s needle felted fox, a Floral hat box display, plus making shell designs in our new silver clay jewellery class.
You’d better book soon though because they are all filling up fast!
Anyway thank you all for your continued support and thank you for being the best customers I could ask for!
Until next time….Happy New Beading!
